All Lives Matter NaPoWriMo #12

Today, April 9 in 1865 the American Civil War ended. It has been 150 years. My son reminded me of that fact and I've been reflecting on what that means. How much and little has changed.

A Wish for an End of an End on April 9th

On this day a war ended
But did it really finish?
The grey and the blue
Fighting brother against brother
Is there no other claim like that now?
We fight for our brothers or with them
In a mortal struggle
Over lives that matter
They did then
They do now
And how do we address this?
Is there an end to who has rights?
And what is equal?
Do we seek the moral middle?
Or hang dangerously over the edge?
Dropping off our prejudices
One after the other
Stacking them to the skies
To sway like the tower of Babel
Hoping to reach God
He will tear down that tower
And scatter us, mixing us up
And a new race will keep pace
With the will of God
That sees each man in his image
No more wars over property or personhood
“Love Thy neighbor” will suffice
To be the stroke to end all wars
