November Playwrighting 13: Grief Bird Play scene 2

Scene 2: SHEILA is sitting on the couch, wrapped in a blanke,t drinking her morning coffee. JAMIE ENTERS in her pajamas and robe.

                                SHEILA

Morning.

(JAMIE waves her to scoot over and climbs under the blanket with her)

Your feet!

                                JAMIE

Little ice cubes. Don’t you run the heat at night?

                                SHEILA

I turn it down, but not off. Are you sure you slept in the house last night?

                                JAMIE

And I had two blankets, but Katie kept hogging them both.

                                SHEILA

Oh, I remember. You just haven’t had to sleep with her for a while. Last summer, she went with us on vacation, and Sammy and Sutton slept in the same bed, and she slept with me. Well, she slept; it was like wrestling a bear all night that wanted all the covers. It was warm, though, you poor thing, I can give you another blanket.

                                JAMIE

That would be great!

(JAMIE takes the blanket they are sharing)

                                SHEILA

Hey!

                                JAMIE

You said you had another one.

(SHEILA goes to get another one as KATIE ENTERS looking like she did wrestle a bear last night)

                                JAMIE

Morn… oh wow, you should see yourself.

                                KATIE

What? I always look like this in the morning.

                                JAMIE

Okay. Really?

                                KATIE

You don’t remember much, do you? Is Sheila up?

                                JAMIE

You know it.

                                KATIE

Scoot.

(KATIE sits and takes most of the blanket)

                                JAMIE

Hey!

(SHEILA ENTERS with blanket and JAMIE holds up two fingers. SHEILA EXITS)

You are a lot of work, you know that?

                                KATIE

Right back at ya, sis.

(SHEILA ENTERS with three more blankets)

                                JAMIE

Now, we’re talking. Gimmie.

                                KATIE

Why’d you bring three?

                                JAMIE

As if you don’t know.

                                KATIE

Is Sammy up yet?

                                SHEILA

Not yet.

                                JAMIE

He sounded like he was up most of the night.

                                SHEILA

He was. He’ll sleep in.

                                KATIE

Doesn’t he have to go to work?

                                SHEILA

They let him off and so he can settle.

                                    JAMIE

Settle? Is that what they call it.

                                SHEILA

That’s what it is for him and me. We need to settle down into a new routine together without Sutton.

                                KATIE

Well, shouldn’t you get him up and going so he stays in his routine?

                                SHEILA

If he’d slept, but no, you don’t want him awake yet. I’ll get him up in a couple of hours if he’s not up.

                                    KATIE

A couple of hours?

                                JAMIE

Let the man sleep!

                                KATIE

Okay, okay.

                                SHEILA

How did you sleep?
