NaPoWrMo: Here are the last 2 poems for National Poetry Month 2026!

It really is my niece’s 21st birthday tomorrow, and I just realized it, so I wrote a poem about her. I hope she has a great birthday! It is also National Honesty Day; I discovered when driving home, they were talking about it on NPR.

My niece at 8 months old
To My Niece, on Her 21st Birthday Eve

It is the night before

A little girl’s first appearance

My sister didn’t know what a chore

Her coming out would be as dear as

Anything she’d ever done before

A May Day round the pole

Birth, you never know what’s in store

Until you go through what others told

All the stories of what would happen

And you hold that tiny bundle

Handed to you even though you feel flattened

It is a rush where your heart tumbles

Summersaults of love and care

You stare into her little eyes wide

Your insides are laid bare

As I imagined, my sister whispers

“Your name is Rachel, welcome.”,

Someday there’d be another sister

And a brother too, yet to become

To repeat this process thrice over

All children are worth it

This one is a prover

To this I will admit

She will turn the world over

Or someday conquer it

How Long is Honesty?

Honest as the day is long

It is quite a saying

Some days are exceedingly long

Dragging as each minute

Exacts justice for every stray thought

Or the wasted second that you’ve spent

As you check the time three times

Only to see thirty seconds

Inch by inch crawl

Toward that excruciating hour

Can honesty be that painful

That it takes all your energy

Draining every ounce of willpower

Until you drop to your knees

Begging for mercy

To make it stop

Your head feels like it will pop

Before you go insane

Waiting for this day to end

Other days rush by so fast

Honesty is a shortcut

It steps on the gas

As the confession tumbles forth

And no punishment comes

Because it was paved

A smooth ride with details

As someone tells you

What you want to hear

The time slips ahead

Could it really be evening already

As you hold steady

Staring at what you thought

You knew already, honestly

It all makes you double-take

Sit down and take it in

With a wide grin

Like sweet nectar

That is like nothing else you’ve ever tasted

Sweet rewards you make your case with

You don’t hesitate to do this day

Nothing is wasted or eschewed

Honesty takes the day

Never ever going away
